Syllabus for Math 2130 – Calculus with Analytic Geometry III

Prerequisite: Math 1120 (Calculus II) with a grade of “C-” or higher.

Text: Multivariable Thomas' Calculus 14th edition by Hass, Heil, & Weir, ISBN: 978-0-13-460608-8 (Used cost approx. $75 -- you can go to AddAll.com for prices).

Cheap Supplementary Texts: [Generally any edition of these texts will do. If you can find a cheaper edition, great.]

Meeting times: This course is online. However, sometimes we will meet synchronously. Our official meeting time is 8:00am until 10:10am Monday through Friday.

Final Exam: Our final exam will be held on the last day of class (Tuesday, August 4th).

Technology: You are welcome to use any technology at your disposal to complete class assignments. We will periodically use Maple in class (Maple is a “computer algebra system”) and have Maple based homework sets. I will provide a code so you can install Maple on your own computer (available for most Mac or Windows machines). Alternatively, you can access software by logging onto a campus machine using https://udesk.appstate.edu. I usually design quizzes and exams so they do not require technology.

Course topics: The course catalog says, “A study of parametric equations, vectors, vector-valued functions, function of several variables, double and triple integrals, and vector analysis.” We will be covering most of the content of chapters 11 – 15 in our text. Your term grade will be based on the results of your tests and final exam as well as your scores on quizzes and homework. Here is more information about the individual components of your grade:

Tests and Final Exam: There will be three tests and a final exam. The final exam may include some review problems from previous tests. However, its focus will be on the vector calculus material covered after the third test. Each test will make up 20% of your final grade and the final exam will make up 20% of your final grade. The dates of the tests listed in the tentative course schedule may change. The actual dates will be announced in class.

Homework & Quizzes: I will post a list of suggested homework problems from the text – these will not be collected. Even though these homework problems will be not collected, working out all of the suggested problems is strongly recommended. Please ask questions about the problems with which you have had difficulty. Periodically we will have short quizzes based on the suggested homework. In addition to the quizzes, I will assign several homework sets some of which will involve more complicated problems which can be completed using Maple & other technology. I encourage you to work on your homework with your classmates. However, you must write up your solutions yourself. Do NOT copy your collaborators work and turn it in as your own. The quizzes and homeworks will make up 20% of your term grade.

Attendance: Don't miss class. If you miss class, you are responsible for the material covered during your absence. If you miss a quiz, test/exam, or workshop, you must bring in documentation proving that your absence is excusable or otherwise receive a zero. If a make-up quiz/test/exam is granted, it must be made up before the next quiz/test/exam.
