• Howard Anton's Calculus — 10^th edition is avaiable on The Internet Archive or Abebooks.com has copies of the 4^th edition (ISBN 0-471-59495-4) for $7.
  ✓ This is a solid standard calculus text with lots of good examples.
• James Stewart's Calculus — 8^th edition is available on The Internet Archive or Bookfinder.com finds copies of the 7^th edition (ISBN 0-534-39321-7) for $5.
  ✓ Many universities use this text. I taught out of it at NCSU and Rutgers.
  Thomas' Calculus — 11^th edition is available on The Internet Archive or Abebooks.com has a copy of the 14^th edition (ISBN: 978-0-13-443898-6) by Hass, et al. for $17.
  ✓ We previously used the Hass, et al. version of Thomas for this course.
• Susan Colley's Vector Calculus — 4^th edition seems to be freely available online.
  ✓ This book is a great expansion of our vector calculus material (from the end of the semester) for those with linear algebra background.
• H.M. Schey's Div, Grad, Curl, and All That — 4^th edition is available on The Internet Archive or Abebooks.com has copies of the 2^nd edition (ISBN 978-0393-96251-2) for about $11.
  ✓ This text gives a "Physics-y" look at the "big" theorems discussed at the end of the course.

Meeting times: We meet from 8:00am until 10:10am Monday through Friday in Walker 314 (unless otherwise announced). However, I plan on giving access to our classroom via Zoom and recording classes for later viewing.

Final Exam: Our final exam will be held in our regular classroom (WA 314) on the last day of class (Tuesday, August 5^th).

Technology: You are welcome to use any technology at your disposal to complete class assignments. We will periodically use Maple in class (Maple is a “computer algebra system”) and have Maple based homework sets. I will provide a code so you can install Maple on your own computer (available for most Mac or Windows machines). Alternatively, you can access software by logging onto a campus machine using https://udesk.appstate.edu. I usually design quizzes and exams so they do not require technology.

Course topics: The course catalog says, “A study of parametric equations, vectors, vector-valued functions, function of several variables, double and triple integrals, and vector analysis.” We will be covering most of the content of chapters 2 – 6 in our text. Your term grade will be based on the results of your tests and final exam as well as your scores on quizzes and homework. Here is more information about the individual components of your grade:

Tests and Final Exam: There will be three tests and a final exam. The final exam may include some review problems from previous tests. However, its focus will be on the vector calculus material covered after the third test. Each test will make up 20% of your final grade and the final exam will make up 20% of your final grade. The dates of the tests listed in the tentative course schedule may change. The actual dates will be announced in class.

Homework & Quizzes: I will post a list of suggested homework problems from the text – these will not be collected. Even though these homework problems will not be collected, working out all of the suggested problems is strongly recommended. Please ask questions about the problems with which you have had difficulty. Please note that some of these problems are available through our electronic homework system (MyLab Math). I will label these as "practice problems". Do keep in mind that not all of the suggested problems are available this way.

Periodically we will have short quizzes based on the suggested homework. In addition to the quizzes, I will assign several homework sets some of which will involve more complicated problems which can be completed using Maple & other technology. I encourage you to work on your homework with your classmates. However, you must write up your solutions yourself. Do NOT copy your collaborators work and turn it in as your own. The quizzes and homeworks will make up 20% of your term grade.

In Person? Online? While coming in person and participating synchronously with our class is best, I understand that a few students cannot be in Boone for the whole summer session. Zoom plus recordings of classes will allow remote and asynchronous participation. However, I do plan to give in person quizzes and exams (approximately once a week). If you absolutely cannot come for these in person, you may arrange with me to deliver these electronically. I will require that you print the quiz/exam (you will need a realiable printer). You will also need to have an area viewable by a webcam to take the quiz/exam and have the camera on during the duration of the quiz/exam.

Attendance: Don't miss class. If you miss class, you are responsible for the material covered during your absence. If you miss a quiz, test/exam, or workshop, you must bring in documentation proving that your absence is excusable or otherwise receive a zero. If a make-up quiz/test/exam is granted, it must be made up before the next quiz/test/exam.
