News & Announcements

12/08 I will take some time tomorrow to discuss what to focus on
to study for the exam. I have posted a couple of old exams
from when I taught modern algebra at Rutgers University: here
Be warned: We studies mostly ring theory in that course
so there are more advanced questions than we're prepared for on
those exams. However, many of the questions make great review
      material. See for example:

      Exam #1: 2(skip part (e)),3-7
      Exam #2: 3,5,6,7b,8a
      [Note: M(R) = 2 by 2 matrices over a ring R.]

12/05 Review session: Monday, December 12th 10:00am until
we get sick of reviewing. I don't plan to do anything structured
during this time. I will answer questions and work through
random problems that seem relevant to the final exam.

--> It looks like Walker 309 should be available at that time.

12/01 Test #3 Answer Key posted.

11/28 Homework Set #6 due Wednesday, December 7th.
Extra credit due by the beginning of the final exam.

11/23 Homework and Test scores have been updated on AsULearn.

Here is an old handout that might be of interest.
It works out all of the quotients of the alternating
      group A4: Quotients of A_4.

In case you've never watched it...
A Finite Simple Group of Order 2
      by the Klein Four Group.
[The Klein 4-group is any non-abelian group of order 4.
       So for example, Z2+Z2.]

We tackle rings next. Here are a few handouts (I'll try to
remember to print off copies to hand out to everyone on Monday):
      Ring Definitions
      Ring Examples

10/17 Homework Set #4 due Monday, October 24th.

10/05 Homework Set #3 due Wednesday, October 12th.

09/30 Test #1 grades are posted on AsULearn. I will pass back the
tests today. You will have until Wednesday to make corrections.
You can get up to 1/3 of your missed credit back.

      For example:
Say I got a 70 and then turn in perfect test corrections, I now
have an 80. On the other hand if I turn in test corrections which
are only 85 correct, then I've only corrected 50% of my mistakes
(15 of the possible 30 missed points) so I'll only get
      "missed points"/3 * 50% = 5 points back and end up with a 75.

Please carefully write up corrections for the parts that
you missed. Then turn in your corrections with your original
test. Please staple your corrections to the front of your test.

09/17 Our first test is next Friday. It will cover chapters 1-3 and
the parts of chapter 0 which we discussed in class.

Hopefully we will finish chapter 3 material on Monday and
use Wednesday for review. You may want to temporarily skip
problems involving "order of an element" and "cyclic" groups
since we haven't finished discussing this material in class.

      To review for the test:
Definitely go over old homework/suggested homework and notes.
In addition you can find old exams and a list of relevant
problems below. Beware! We changed texts (and modified 3110)
since I last taught this class. So none of the old test match
up perfectly. But you can still get a sense of what sorts of
      things I'm likely to ask.

You can find old exams here.
