News & Announcements

12/11 Grades are turned in.

Notes: Test #2 could have been Homework #7. Final project/presentations got somewhat killed
off because of the major snowstorm. Instead of presentations we just went with handouts.

11/16 It's too cold outside for the busses...or something like that.
Anyway since class was cancelled, I made a video. I finished up our discussion or interior/hook products
      and then covered pullbacks (3.14)...

      Finishing 3.13 and 3.14 [48 mins]

11/02 Homework #6 (.pdf) [Source: (.tex)] due Friday, November 9th.

10/24 Homework #5 (.pdf) [Source: (.tex)] due Wednesday, October 31st.

10/02 Homework #4 (.pdf) [Source: (.tex)] due Monday, October 8th.

09/24 Coordinates vs. Coordinate Matrices (.pdf) [Source: (.tex)]

09/18 Handouts from Linear Algebra...

RREF and Linear Correspondence (.pdf) [Source: (.tex)]
      Computing Bases (.pdf) [Source: (.tex)]
Coordinate Matrix Example (.pdf) [Source: (.tex)]
Kernel, Range, & Composition Example (.pdf) [Source: (.tex)]

Homework #3 (.pdf) [Source: (.tex)] due Wednesday, September 26th. Friday? Monday?

09/17 These cover Renteln 1.3-1.5 (sort of)...

      Quotient Spaces [40 mins]
Isomorphism Theorem & Coord. Matrices [40 mins]

Even though classes are canceled tomorrow, I plan on being in my office in the morning: 8am-12ish.
I'm less sure about coming in tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully, I'll have a new homework set (Hwk #3)
      posted sometime tomorrow.

09/14 Intro. to Linear Algebra Renteln 1.1 and 1.2 (sort of).

09/10 Homework #2 (.pdf) [Source: (.tex)] due Monday, September 17th.

08/28 Homework #1 (.pdf) [Source: (.tex)] due Wednesday, September 5th.

08/21 Differentiability (.pdf) [Source: (.tex)] handout for tomorrow.

Quadratic Approximations Handout (.pdf) and Maple worksheet

	  JUNIOR HONORS SEMINAR

      Course Title & Description:

      MAT 3510 - Junior Honors Seminar - 3 credits

In this course, I plan on looking at a few topics just beyond the
end of intro. to linear algebra and calculus 3. I plan to explore:
quotient spaces, dual spaces, tensor products, and exterior algebras.

Following this intermediate linear algebra, I plan to delve into a
mini-course in topology. Specifically we will be studying the concept
of a "manifold" (1-dimensional manifolds are curves, 2-dimensional
	  manifolds are surfaces).

Then we look at vector fields, differential forms, and exterior
derivatives (exterior derivatives generalize gradient, curl, and
divergence). Our first big punchline will be the generalized Stokes'
theorem (this theorem includes the fundamental theorem of calculus,
the fundamental theorem of line integrals, Green's theorem, Stokes'
theorem, and the divergence theorem all as special cases).

After covering linear algebra and basic manifold theory, we can turn
our attention to topics that interest the class. These could include
bits of differential geometry (like curvature tensors, Riemannian
geometry, and the math of general relativity). Or we could explore
deRham cohomology and get a taste of algebraic topology. Or ....
	  the possibilities are endless. :)

Prerequisites: MAT 2240, 2110, & 2130. Open to honors students.
