News & Announcements

05/03 Final homework grades are now posted. Please make sure everything
looks right. Also, I capped homework averages at 105%.

04/28 Test #3 and its answer key are posted HERE.

04/27 Final notes:

The review session will be held on Monday, May 3rd from 12pm
until I get tired of answering your questions. We will meet
      in Walker 309 --- hopefully.

The final exam will be held Tuesday, May 4th from 3 to 5:30pm
      in our regular classroom.

You may bring 1 page (no bigger than 8 1/2 by 11 inch standard
copy paper) single-sided of notes. You can put whatever you
want on your sheet of notes. I suggest writing up definitions
which give you trouble, subgroup/subring tests, theorems you
      can't remember, helpful examples, etc.

I will post final homework grades soon (hopefully tomorrow).

I am currently working on answer keys for our tests.

04/21 Extra Credit Homework due Monday, April 26th.

04/18 The final exam from Fall 2009 (along with it answer key)
      are now posted here.

I will NOT be in my office from 11am-12pm tomorrow (Monday).

04/16 Test #2 correction grades and updated Test #2 grades have been
      posted on AsULearn.

Don't forget we have a homework assignment due this Monday
and our last test is Wednesday.

      Test #3 covers:

      Sections 4.4, 4.5, 5.1, 5.2, and
part of 6.1 (we will talk about ideals today,
                   quotient rings will come later).

I also plan to include an "isomorphic or not" question
about groups (that didn't quite make it on the last test).

Review your notes and homework. Make sure you're trying plenty
      of suggested homework problems.

OLD TESTS AND ANSWER KEYS HERE.

Of the old tests, the following problems are relevant:

      Fall 2009 Test #3 problems 1, 2, 5, and 6.
      Spring 2009 Test #3 problems 1, 4, and 5.

Spring 2009 Final Exam problems 1-5, and 7
(problem 8 isn't a bad review problem either, but maybe a bit
       off the beaten track.)

I will (hopefully) get Fall 2009's Final Exam and answer key
posted by Monday. Part of that exam should be helpful as well.

04/11 Homework Set #6 due Monday, April 19th.

04/09 Test #2 (Blank Copy)

04/06 Test #2 grades are posted. You may view your score on AsULearn.

I will return the exams tomorrow and you will have until Monday
(April 12th) to write up corrections for your test.
      Specifically:

  (1) Redo ALL of the problems - even ones you got right. Write the solutions up neatly.
  (2) For problem #1 (the big table), supply reasons for your answers -- for example, if
G is cylic, give a generator for G.
  (3) For problem #5 part (c), prove the extra credit version of the problem (although it
won't be extra credit anymore) -- that is -- show that "G cyclic ==> psi(G) is cyclic".
  (4) STAPLE you work to your TEST and turn them both in (on Monday).
RETURN YOUR ORIGINAL TEST WITH YOUR CORRECTIONS!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.
Also, you may work together on corrections.

      What is this (potentially) worth?

A 100% correct correction will get you back 1/2 of the points that you missed.
      Here are a few examples:

If you got 60% on Test 2 and turned in 100% corrections,
      you will have 60 + (100-60)/2 = 60 + 20 = 80% on Test 2.

If you got 60% on Test 2 and turned in 50% correct corrections,
      you will have 60 + (100-60)/2 * 50% = 60 + 10 = 70% on Test 2.

If you got 60% on Test 2 but didn't turn in corrections, you
      score will not change.

03/26 Test #2 is next Wednesday. We will reivew on Monday.
To get ready for the test you should look over old homeworks,
      suggested homeworks, and notes.

Both test #2's are relevant and...
        Fall 2009: Problems 1, 3, and 4 on test 3.

02/24 Examples of Groups

02/18 Test #1 is Monday. To help study for the test I suggest...

Look over suggested homework...at the very least read all of the problems.
Look over your homework sets. Fix whatever went wrong.
Look over your notes from class then...
After studying, try taking Spring and Fall 2009's test 1 which can be found...

OLD TESTS AND ANSWER KEYS HERE.

The old tests should make good reviews, we can discuss some of these problems
during tomorrow's review if you want.
[Note: Spring 2009 Test #1 is relevant. Fall 2009 Test #1 is as well and
             so is Fall 2009 Test #2 Problem #3 parts (a) and (b).]

02/12 Test #1 is scheduled for Monday, February 22nd.

Homework Set #3 due Friday, February 19th.

01/29 Homework Set #2 due Friday, February 5th.

01/15 Homework Set #1 due Friday, January 22nd.

Please note: If the homework #1 webpage doesn't print well, you
can download a package of fonts to help things look better.
