      Have a Merry Christmas!

12/13 Final Exam (.pdf)

Our official exam time has been moved (due to more upcoming bad weather).
So instead of an endless delay, your exam has been emailed to you (and it
      is posted above).

Please complete the exam and return it to me by 3:00pm tomorrow.
DO NOT DISCUSS THIS EXAM WITH YOUR CLASSMATES (until after 3pm tomorrow).

You may either scan in your work and email it to me or turn it in to me
in person. I will be in Walker 106 between 12pm and 2:30pm tomorrow afternoon
(giving my Calc II class their final -- hopefully) or you can check my office.
If you can't find me, please place your exam in a manilla envelope (big
envelopes are sitting around near Sandy's office, you can borrow one) and
slide it under my office door.

Your exam is due: Tuesday, December 14th at 3:00pm NO LATER!!!

Not turning in your exam by 3pm will mean VERY VERY BAD THINGS for your grade.

For those who still owe me homework, please turn that in with your final.

One last thing...Please email me to verify you got this message. If you see
any of your classmates, please let them know about this message in case they
don't check their email very often.

      Math 4720 Students:
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Problems #9 and #10 are grad problems. Feel free to attempt them.
They won't count against you. I don't know how much I'll weight them
but they'll count as some sort of extra credit.
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------

12/06 Monday afternoon office hours canceled.

Well, it wouldn't be Appalachian without some really
      cold weather and canceled classes.

I will do my best to get to my office this morning
for regular office hours and here are my plans for
      this week:

      Office hours...
         Monday 10am - 12pm & 2pm - 4pm
        Tuesday 10am - 12pm
      Wednesday 10am - 12pm
       Thursday 10am - 12pm
         Friday 10am - 12pm

I will probably be in my office before 10am every day.
Feel free to call to see if I'm already there. Also,
if the weather looks really bad, calling ahead to see
if I made it in would be a good idea.

My meeting on Tuesday was canceled so I'll be in our
regular room at 2pm. Let's plan on reviewing from
      2pm until midnight...no wait...you should review that
long. I'll probably stop closer to 4pm (or earlier).

Also, if you bring your homework in today, I'll try to
have it graded by the review session tomorrow.

11/23 Homework #5 is due by the last day of classes (Monday, December 6th).
4720 students may skip one problem. 5210 students must do all of them.

      Please turn in problems: 10.1 #8 and #9, 10.2 #4, 10.3 #7 and #9, 12.1 #16.

11/02 Test #2 has been moved back one week.
Test #2 will be held Tuesday, November 16th.

Homework #4 problem 7.4 #37: You only have to prove one direction
of the if and only if statement. The other direction is extra credit.
Hint: The "easier" direction is: "If the set of non-units is an
ideal M, then it is a unique maximal ideal and R is local."

I taught a undergraduate modern algebra course at Rutgers with a focus
on ring theory. These old exams should be great reviews for our upcoming
      test.
